NEW YORK – In a development that has baffled the gaming community, scalpers have begun targeting fans of Rockstar Games’ highly anticipated title, Grand Theft Auto 6, by listing pre-order copies on eBay at significantly inflated prices.
Despite Rockstar Games’ clear commitment to a digital-first release and the wide availability of pre-orders through official retail channels, opportunistic sellers are successfully flipping copies for premiums above the standard $80 retail price.
The trend has emerged shortly after pre-orders officially went live for the public on June 25. While the standard edition of the game is consistently priced at $80 at major retailers, some eBay listings have already seen transactions closed at $90 or higher.
This behavior comes despite the fact that GTA 6, scheduled for release on November 19, 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, will not face the traditional stock shortages typically associated with physical console or game launches.
Industry analysts are particularly puzzled by the surge in scalping for this title, primarily because Rockstar Games has confirmed that GTA 6 will be a digital-only experience.
Even for fans who desire a physical presence on their shelf, the “physical” editions currently available through major retailers like Amazon, Best Buy, and Target consist only of a box containing a digital download code.
As such, there is no technical barrier preventing players from securing their own copies directly from official sources.
Compounding the irony, buyers on eBay are not only paying an inflated markup but are often incurring additional costs. Listings for physical “code-in-box” versions on the auction site are subject to shipping fees, further increasing the total cost compared to the seamless, fee-free experience of purchasing directly from digital storefronts.
Reports also indicate that Rockstar Games has no current plans to pivot toward a traditional disc release, reinforcing the digital-only nature of the upcoming launch.
For the dedicated fanbase that has waited over 13 years for the next installment in the franchise, the emergence of a “secondary market” for a product that is readily available at MSRP serves as a stark reminder of the complexities inherent in modern gaming hype cycles.
As the November release date approaches, prospective players are encouraged to utilize authorized retail platforms to avoid unnecessary markups.
