Screenshot Sparks Debate Over Airtel’s Unlimited 5G Policy
Airtel’s unlimited 5G service has come under the spotlight after a screenshot circulating on social media suggested that the telecom operator may restrict mobile hotspot usage on its unlimited 5G plans. The image, which claims to show Airtel’s terms and conditions, states that customers who activate Unlimited 5G Data are not allowed to share that data via a mobile hotspot.
The alleged policy has triggered widespread discussion among Airtel users, many of whom rely on their smartphones as internet hotspots for laptops, tablets, and other connected devices. Although Airtel currently offers unlimited 5G data to eligible prepaid and postpaid users through the Airtel app, the company has not officially confirmed whether hotspot usage is excluded from this benefit.
Users Express Frustration as Speculation Grows
The screenshot quickly gained attention on social media platform X, where several users expressed disappointment. Many argued that mobile hotspot functionality is essential for remote work, online classes, and travel. Some users even claimed they would consider switching to competing networks if the restriction proves to be true.
Others questioned how a telecom company could identify whether unlimited 5G data is being used directly on a smartphone or shared with another device. Industry experts explain that network operators can detect hotspot usage using several technical methods, including Time-to-Live (TTL) analysis, TCP/IP fingerprinting, HTTP User-Agent detection, and Deep Packet Inspection (DPI). These technologies help identify different devices connected through a single mobile connection.
Apart from the hotspot controversy, Airtel already applies a 300GB monthly fair usage limit on unlimited 5G data for eligible users, after which normal data policies may apply.
Jio and Vi Continue to Allow Hotspot Usage
The discussion has also drawn comparisons with rival telecom operators. According to their publicly available terms, Reliance Jio currently allows users on eligible True 5G plans to share unlimited 5G data via mobile hotspot without specifically restricting the feature. Vodafone Idea (Vi) also does not mention hotspot restrictions, although it enforces a 300GB usage cap during each 28-day cycle.
As of now, Airtel has not released an official clarification regarding the viral screenshot or confirmed whether unlimited 5G hotspot usage has been restricted. Until the company issues a formal statement, users are advised to rely on Airtel’s latest published terms and conditions and official announcements for accurate information.
