Google has announced a major transformation of its Search platform, marking what the company describes as the biggest redesign of the search experience in more than two decades.
The update introduces a completely new AI-powered search interface capable of handling images, files, videos, and even open browser tabs directly through the search box.
The announcement was made during Google I/O 2026, where CEO Sundar Pichai highlighted the rapid growth of the company’s AI-driven search ecosystem.
According to Google, AI Mode has already crossed one billion monthly active users, while search activity overall reached record highs during the latest quarter.
For years, Google’s iconic search box remained largely unchanged, relying mainly on text input and autocomplete suggestions. The new version introduces a dynamic AI-enhanced interface that expands while users type and supports multimodal inputs beyond simple keywords.
Users will now be able to upload images, attach documents, include video clips, and even pull information directly from Chrome tabs into a search request.
Google says the updated system is designed to make searching feel more conversational and intuitive, allowing users to interact with Search more like an AI assistant than a traditional search engine.
The rollout begins immediately in countries where AI Mode is currently available.
