OpenAI has expanded ChatGPT’s integration with Google Drive, introducing a new capability that allows users to access and edit files directly within a ChatGPT conversation. The update is aimed at making document-based work more convenient by reducing the need to switch repeatedly between ChatGPT and Google Drive.
The feature began rolling out on August 13 and is available on the web for ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Enterprise, Edu, Healthcare and Business subscribers. According to OpenAI’s release information, users can work with files stored in My Drive as well as files and folders that have been shared directly with them.
With the updated integration, users can access supported Google Drive files through ChatGPT’s Library and add them to conversations using @mentions or the plus button in the prompt box. Once a document is available in a chat, users can ask ChatGPT to summarize, analyze, compare or create new content based on the information inside it.
One of the most significant additions is the ability to make changes directly from the ChatGPT interface. When the required permissions are granted, edits made through ChatGPT can be saved automatically to the original file in Google Drive. Users can also select a folder and ask ChatGPT to apply changes across multiple files, potentially making repetitive document-management tasks considerably faster.
The integration could be particularly useful for users who regularly work with large collections of documents. Instead of opening individual files, making changes manually and returning to ChatGPT for further analysis, users can perform several steps within the same conversation.
Google already offers its own AI-powered features inside Google Drive through Gemini, making the expanded ChatGPT integration an alternative for people who prefer OpenAI’s chatbot for document-related workflows. OpenAI says mobile support will follow, although it has not provided a specific release date.
The update also highlights OpenAI’s broader effort to make ChatGPT work more closely with external applications and users’ existing workflows. OpenAI describes connected apps as a way for ChatGPT to pull relevant context from trusted applications and sources.
For now, the new Google Drive editing capabilities remain limited to eligible paid users on the web, with wider availability expected to expand over time.
