Apple’s upcoming iPhone 18 Pro could receive one of its most significant internal upgrades in years, with multiple reports pointing to the company’s first smartphone chip built using a 2nm manufacturing process. The technology is expected to improve performance and power efficiency while giving Apple additional processing headroom for artificial intelligence and demanding applications.
The processor is widely expected to be called the A20 Pro, although Apple has not officially confirmed the name or specifications. Recent reports say the chip could be manufactured by TSMC using its next-generation 2nm process. Apple has reportedly been preparing for the transition for several years, making the iPhone 18 Pro one of the first major smartphones expected to use the technology.
A move from 3nm to 2nm could allow Apple to place more transistors into a similar chip area while improving energy efficiency. This could translate into faster CPU and GPU performance, better sustained gaming performance and lower heat generation during demanding tasks. However, the actual improvement will depend on Apple’s final chip architecture and software optimization.
Battery life could be another major beneficiary. A more efficient processor can complete workloads using less power, potentially allowing the iPhone 18 Pro to deliver longer endurance without requiring a dramatically larger battery. Reports also suggest that Apple could combine the A20 Pro with other efficiency-focused hardware, including its next-generation C2 modem.
The new chip could also play an important role in Apple’s growing artificial intelligence strategy. A more powerful Neural Engine may enable faster on-device AI processing for features involving Siri, photography, writing tools and other machine-learning workloads. Improved processing capabilities could also enhance computational photography by allowing the phone to analyze images and video more quickly.
Another reported change is Wafer-Level Multi-Chip Module (WMCM) packaging, which could place memory closer to the processor and potentially improve performance and efficiency for AI and high-end gaming.
Apple is expected to unveil the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max in September 2026, although the company has not officially confirmed the launch date or specifications.
For now, the 2nm A20 Pro remains unconfirmed, but the growing number of reports suggests Apple’s next Pro iPhones could deliver a substantial leap in processing efficiency rather than simply another incremental performance upgrade.
