Google has officially stepped deeper into the world of “agentic AI” with the unveiling of Gemini Spark, a new always-on digital assistant designed to handle routine online tasks automatically.
Announced during the company’s I/O 2026 developer conference, Spark represents Google’s attempt to move beyond traditional chatbots and create an AI assistant that quietly works in the background throughout the day.
Unlike earlier virtual assistants that waited for commands, Gemini Spark is designed to act more proactively
Powered by Google’s latest Gemini 3.5 AI model, the assistant can draft emails, organize schedules, prepare documents, summarize information and manage digital tasks even when a user’s laptop is closed.
Google says the system operates on dedicated cloud-based virtual machines, allowing it to continue working independently without needing an active device connection.
During the keynote presentation, Google executives described Spark as a “personal AI agent” capable of navigating a user’s digital life with minimal supervision.
The assistant integrates directly with Gmail, Google Docs, Sheets and other Workspace apps, making it easier for users to automate repetitive work tasks.
Google also confirmed that support for third-party platforms will expand through the Model Context Protocol (MCP), potentially allowing Spark to interact with services beyond the Google ecosystem.
The launch reflects Google’s growing push to compete in the rapidly expanding AI assistant market, where companies like OpenAI and Anthropic are also building autonomous AI systems.
Analysts believe Spark could become one of Google’s most important AI products because of its deep connection with services already used by billions worldwide.
Google also demonstrated how Spark may eventually support shopping assistance, travel planning, voice interactions and smart notifications across Android devices and wearable technology.
Community reactions online have been mixed, with some users excited about the convenience while others raised concerns about privacy and giving AI systems greater control over personal data and online activity.
With Gemini Spark, Google appears to be signaling a major shift in how people interact with technology — one where AI no longer simply answers questions, but actively manages parts of everyday life in the background.
