YouTube is stepping up its podcast ambitions with a fresh set of AI-powered features designed to make listening more personal and convenient for Premium subscribers. The latest update introduces smart podcast recommendations, an adaptive playback feature called “Auto speed,” and a new listening mode aimed at users who consume content while traveling, exercising, or multitasking.
The announcement highlights YouTube’s growing push into the podcast space as competition intensifies among major streaming platforms. With companies like Netflix expanding into video podcasts and Spotify continuing to dominate audio streaming, YouTube appears determined to strengthen its position as a major destination for podcast audiences.
One of the biggest additions is an AI-driven recommendation system that builds on YouTube’s existing “Ask Music” feature. Premium users can now receive podcast suggestions based on their interests, moods, favorite creators, or preferred genres. Instead of manually searching for shows, listeners will get curated recommendations tailored to their habits and viewing history.
YouTube has also introduced a new “Auto speed” feature that automatically adjusts playback speed during conversations. The tool is designed to speed through slower moments while maintaining clarity during complex discussions or information-heavy segments. The company says this will create a smoother listening experience without forcing users to constantly change playback settings themselves.
Another notable addition is the new “on-the-go” listening mode. The feature simplifies podcast controls for users who are commuting, running, or performing other activities where hands-free interaction is important. Larger buttons and quick actions such as skipping ahead, rewinding, or moving to the next episode are designed to make background listening easier and more practical.
The new tools are currently available for YouTube Premium users on Android devices, while support for iOS is expected in the coming months.
YouTube also revealed impressive podcast engagement numbers alongside the update. According to the company, Premium users watched more than 800 million hours of podcast content during April 2026 alone, while YouTube Podcasts has now crossed 1 billion monthly active users globally.
The move signals YouTube’s larger strategy to transform itself from a video-sharing platform into a full-scale entertainment and audio ecosystem powered increasingly by artificial intelligence.
