Pokémon GO players worldwide received one of the biggest updates of the year as Mega Mewtwo X officially made its debut during Pokémon GO Fest 2026: Global. The legendary Pokémon arrived through the newly introduced Super Mega Raids, a tougher raid format designed to test experienced trainers with more challenging battles and greater rewards.
Players who successfully defeated Mega Mewtwo X earned Mewtwo Mega Energy X, the essential resource needed to Mega Evolve eligible Mewtwo into its powerful Mega X form. Niantic also rewarded trainers with bonus features, as every Mewtwo caught after these special raids came equipped with the Fighting-type Fast Attack Counter, making it even more valuable for competitive battles and high-level raids.
Super Mega Raids Bring Bigger Rewards
The launch of Super Mega Raids marks a significant change in Pokémon GO’s raid system. Unlike standard Mega Raids, these battles require stronger teams and better coordination but offer exclusive rewards. Every captured Mewtwo from the event already has at least one Mega Level unlocked, while lucky trainers may receive Pokémon starting at Mega Level 2 or even Mega Level 3, reducing the time needed to maximize its potential.
Players who already own a Mewtwo don’t need to catch another one to enjoy the new Mega Evolution. By collecting enough Mega Energy X through raids and selected Timed Research tasks, previously captured Mewtwo can also transform into Mega Mewtwo X.
Shiny Trainers Receive Good News
Collectors have another reason to celebrate, as Shiny Mewtwo is fully compatible with the new Mega Evolution. Trainers who already own the rare shiny version can unlock Shiny Mega Mewtwo X using the required Mega Energy, adding one of the game’s most desirable Pokémon to their collection.
Mega Mewtwo X combines Psychic and Fighting typing, creating a different battle strategy compared to Mega Mewtwo Y. Its powerful attack stats, improved move pool, and the addition of Counter make it a formidable option for raids, Gym battles, and selected PvP formats.
Although the initial event has concluded, Niantic is expected to bring Super Mega Raids back in future events. Trainers are encouraged to keep collecting Mega Energy, strengthen their best Mewtwo, and stay prepared for the next appearance of one of Pokémon GO’s strongest Mega Evolutions.
